Analogical Code



This style causes viewer to make mental comparisons between things.

Symbolic Sign


A style in which the signifier does not resemble the signified but it relates so that it can be universal.

Closure Gestalt


Closure occurs when an object is is not completely enclosed. This panda is a good example of this principal. It is not completed, but yet the viewer knows exactly what they are seeing.

Movement


This effect is done with the motion of a camera that produces blurring in a photo, which gives a movement effect. This picture of city lights demonstrates that style.

Atmospheric Perspective



The effect produced by diffusion of light in the atmosphere where distant objects have less clarity of outline and are lighter in tone.

Chiaroscuro Lighting


This effect is characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark. This picture has that strong contrast between those two elements.

Warm Colors


The colors red, orange, and yellow are considered warm colors. This sunset is a clear example of warm colors.

Cool Colors


The colors blue, green, and violet are considered cool colors.

Asymmetrical Balance


This concept is created typically off-center or with an odd number of elements. The Starry Night demonstrates this concept perfectly.

Figure-Ground Relationship


This concept is mostly used in 2D work. It is the relationship between a form or figure and its background.
